The Andean Pastoral Livelihoods Initiative

A social enterprise with a mission to create regenerative economies in Southern Peru.

We create regenerative, resilient communities, ecosystems, and economies in Southern Peru

With our support, pastoral communities develop regenerative, participatory rangeland governance practices and develop effective cooperatives and producer associations that bring to market high-quality and differentiated fiber products.

Our blended approach

Community collaboration & dialogue

Our landscapes are complex and diverse. We enable inclusive community collaboration at the local, regional and national level. By weaving together multiple stakeholders - community groups, associations, business interests, public agencies, and more - we create the conditions for productive dialogue and enable the emergence of win- win solutions.

Capacity development

Enabling regeneration requires building and revaluing a variety of skills and competencies - from ecological knowledge to community engagement, from organizational knowledge to business acumen. Our capacity development efforts focus on understanding what capacities currently exist, what we can honor and what the gaps are - and how to mobilize the support communities need to succeed.

Enterprise development

Without sustainable livelihoods, people and communities cannot thrive. APLI supports the development of regenerative enterprises that create cycles of ecological, social and economic value. We provide catalytic, integrated capital pathways and development services to maximize the economic potential of Andean landscapes.

The problems in the Peruvian Andes affects millions

The Peruvian Andes, a globally recognized biodiversity hotspot, plays an essential role in climate action.
  • Indigenous pastoral herding communities with potentially lucrative textile practices lack business development know-how and face major barriers in accessing financing and markets
  • Global warming and uneven rangeland management are threatening high mountain grasslands, which are particularly important for carbon sequestration and regulating water flows
  • Millions of downstream communities need the landscape to be healthy and functioning, and the herders need support to enable them to continue to expand their vital role
  • Deterioration of rangelands as a result of overgrazing, uprooting and recurrent droughts, lack of regulations and conservation, and encroachment of crops and mining invesments

The foundation of our work

We support indigenous pastoral communities in their efforts to tend to the land, preserve their culture, and create thriving regenerative economies in the Southern Peruvian Macroregion.
What we do

We connect families and communities, enable productive collaborations, develop organizational and technical capacity, and empower them to create a thriving, ecologically-sound economy and enterprises.

Transformational pathway

APLI uses a comprehensive approach that blends community collaboration, capacity development and regenerative enterprise development in order to enable a shift towards resilient economies, thriving ecosystems, and flourishing cultures.

Looking to the future

We envision resilient, vital, and thriving pastoral communities and Andean ecosystems. By leveraging the region’s rich biocultural knowledge and biodiversity, pastoral communities are able to restore ecologies and thrive economically.

There is another way

We see potential and support these special places and people in realizing the full social, ecological, and economic potential of the place. APLI empowers communities to create locally-driven, culturally-appropriate and ecologically-sound economies and societies that live in harmony with nature.

Our grounding

Our work is based on Andean principles of Ayni, Mita and Minga, and is deeply rooted in participatory community-based processes and regenerative models of development that reveal the essence of place. These principles enable equitable communities that live in harmony with nature and create virtuous cycles of regenerative development.
